Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about using Slapback for music collaboration, AI feedback, and audio file sharing.
What is Slapback?
Slapback is a feedback platform built for music producers, designed to harness both human and AI feedback. Share your tracks to get timestamped feedback from trusted collaborators and leverage AI for instant production insights. It's like having a mixing engineer, A&R, and fellow producers on-demand, helping you perfect your sound before release.
Do I need Ableton Live to use Slapback?
No! You can start with just an audio file (WAV, MP3, or AIFF) or even paste a SoundCloud link. Ableton project files are completely optional but allow for finer-grained feedback from humans. Also, attaching an Ableton file to your Slapback project yields much more useful AI feedback.
What's the difference between AI and human feedback?
AI feedback provides instant analysis of both technical and creative aspects of your production - from mixing and mastering to arrangement and sound design suggestions. Human feedback brings personal taste, emotional connection, and builds collaborative relationships. Both can offer valuable creative and technical insights, but humans add the irreplaceable element of personal connection and shared musical journey.
Can I use both AI and human feedback on the same track?
Yes, and we encourage it! Slapback was built on the belief that combining AI and human feedback serves creatives best. AI provides instant, objective technical insights at any hour, while humans bring taste, intuition, and the collaborative relationships that fuel artistic growth. Many producers use AI for initial analysis during production, then invite trusted collaborators for creative feedback before release.
How does the AI feedback work?
Our AI analyzes your audio file and provides timestamped suggestions about mixing, arrangement, sound design, and overall production. You can guide it with specific questions you have in mind and choose from different AI personas - from a neutral professional to quirky characters like Rick Rubin or Bjork - each offering their unique perspective on your music.
Is Slapback free?
Yes! Slapback has a free tier that includes full access to human collaboration features and a limited number of AI analyses per month. PRO subscribers get unlimited AI feedback, priority support, and additional features. You can upgrade anytime from your dashboard.
Can I leave voice note feedback?
Absolutely! You can record voice comments directly in the app - just click the microphone icon when adding feedback. Voice notes are automatically compressed and timestamped to the track, making it easy to give detailed, natural feedback without typing.
Who's behind Slapback?
Slapback was created by
a team led by
atish, a
music producer,
label manager,
artist mentor, and
software engineer who cares deeply about music and the artistic process. Feel free to join the
Discord community to chat about it.
Why was Slapback created?
Slapback was born out of frustration with the inefficient ways producers share feedback. Disgusting inline email threads, voice memos with vague timestamps, and walls of text that reference 'that part after the drop'... there had to be a better way.
Do you store my music files on your servers?
We store audio files (mp3, wav, etc.) securely on our servers to enable playback and collaboration features. However, we do NOT store your .als (Ableton Live Set) files. These are analyzed in your browser, and we only extract the essential metadata (track names, arrangement, plugin usage) needed to recreate the project structure. Your original .als files never leave your computer.
Will my music be used to train AI models?
No, your music will NOT be used to train AI models. When you use our AI feedback feature, your audio is processed through
Google Gemini APIs. According to their terms of service, data sent through their APIs is not used for model training. Your music remains private and is only analyzed to provide you with instant production feedback.
Is this related to pluginhell.io?
Yes and no.
Plugin Hell and Slapback were built by the same team. Both products help make the artist collaboration process easier, but they exist independently (for now).
What is lufster.io?
LUFster is a free, browser-based LUFS analyzer built by the same team. It provides professional loudness measurements (Integrated LUFS, True Peak, Loudness Range) without uploading your files - everything runs locally in your browser.
Will Slapback support DAWs other than Ableton?
You can already use Slapback with any DAW! Simply upload your exported audio file to get started with AI and human feedback. Full DAW project file support (like Slapback has for Ableton) will come to other DAWs (Logic, FL, Pro Tools, Reaper) in the future.
Is Slapback open to partnerships with music academies, engineering houses, or labels?
Absolutely! Slapback is already partnering with
IO Music Academy, where students use Slapback to submit course homework and receive feedback from instructors. We're actively seeking more partnerships with music academies, engineering houses, labels, and other organizations that could benefit from better collaboration tools. If you're interested in integrating Slapback into your workflow or exploring custom solutions, please reach out through the Discord community or contact us directly.
