Slapback vs ChatGPT for mix feedback

By Alex KremerLast updated and verified

If you already pay for ChatGPT, it's fair to ask whether you need anything else for mix feedback.

ChatGPT is a general-purpose assistant that accepts audio files on paid plans. Slapback only does music feedback.

Who should pick which

Pick ChatGPT if you:

  • already pay for ChatGPT and want to talk through a recording in a conversation
  • want one assistant for music and everything else
  • want it on web, iOS and Android

Pick Slapback if you:

  • want your mix measured (loudness, true peak, tonal balance, stereo width, dynamics) against a released track
  • want collaborators on the same timeline
  • want feedback on audio without a paid plan: your first runs are free
  • want your music never used to train AI models

What Slapback's notes look like

Two notes from real Slapback runs, copied word for word.

Engineering Feedback · Important

Lean low-mids and body (250 Hz – 2 kHz)

Compared to the reference track, your low-mids (250–500 Hz) are 3.3 dB down, and your core mids (500 Hz–2 kHz) are 2.3 dB down. This makes the overall balance feel slightly hollow or scooped.

Suggestion: Check if you have high-pass filters set too aggressively on melodic elements. Adding a gentle 1 to 2 dB wide bell boost around 350–600 Hz on your chord instruments or pads will restore body and warmth.

Creative Feedback · 3:42 · Critical

This drop feels almost identical to the one at 01:32. To elevate it, add a new harmonic layer. A high-octave string pad playing long, sustained notes that follow the chord progression would add a sense of scale and make this drop feel bigger than the first.

Where Slapback falls short

  • It only gives music feedback. ChatGPT is a general-purpose assistant.
  • After your free runs, Pro is $16.99/month, on top of any ChatGPT plan you already pay for.
  • No score. If you want a number to track from one version to the next, Slapback doesn't give one.
  • The reference catalog is electronic music only (house, techno and related styles). For other genres, choose your own reference before you run Engineering Feedback.
  • It's AI, so it can still get things wrong. It can mistake one section for another or name the wrong instrument.

Questions producers ask

Can ChatGPT listen to my song?

ChatGPT accepts audio files on paid plans and can transcribe and discuss a recording, according to the ChatGPT Help Center. Its audio examples are meetings, interviews and lectures. It doesn't mention music or mix analysis.

Can I upload audio to ChatGPT on the free plan?

No. The Help Center says audio uploads are not available on the Free plan at this time, and that availability can vary by region and model. Slapback's free runs work on a full track with no card.

Does ChatGPT train on my music?

On Free, Go, Plus and Pro, content is used to train models unless you opt out, according to ChatGPT's pricing page. Slapback never uses your music to train AI models.

Can Slapback answer questions about my track?

Yes. Ask the AI a follow-up about any note. Creative Feedback also answers a question you pick or type before the run, like "Banger?" or "Is it ready to release?"
